At Skimmilk Farm

in memory of Jean Pedrick

Thank you, dears, for the steady miracle –
something so tasty and something so lyrical –

Jean Pedrick, "Thank You, Ladies"

In the future, which comes slowly,

but really is already there,

may there be pure days like this one

waiting for us, with horses grazing

in the pasture one farm over

and canna lilies at the edge of the garden.

We know better

than to take these things for granted,

but may we be granted them

in the future that is already there.
